The 2022 Maserati Ghibli-car specifications and price

 The 2022 Maserati Ghibli, with its designer flair and twin-turbo engine, brings a lot of Italian attitude to the mid-size luxury sedan party. Four-cylinder engines be damned, the Ghibli comes standard with a 345-hp twin-turbo V-6, with higher trims getting a 424-hp version or a 580-hp twin-turbo V-8. 



The Ghibli's chassis is designed up for driving thrills to go along with its powerful engines—a it's joy to pitch down a winding back road. Unfortunately, it may be too focused on fun, because the Ghibli falls short in the luxury and comfort areas, with its rear seat being less comfortable than rivals like the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-class.

The Ghibli's cabin is adorned with a slew of leather, wood, and metal accents, yet some knobs and switches look to have been plucked straight from the Stellantis (Maserati's parent company) parts bin. Nonetheless, the Maserati's appearance and performance make it appealing, and its relative obscurity ensures that it attracts attention in the same way that Italian exotics from Ferrari and Lamborghini do.


What's new in the car?


For 2022, Maserati has streamlined the Ghibli portfolio by separating it into three distinct trim levels, starting with the 345-hp GT, then the 424-hp Modena, and finally the monstrous 580-hp Trofeo. The GT has a more luxurious look, but the Modena and Trofeo communicate their performance through more aggressive design concepts. The Ghibli now includes a number of driver-assistance functions as standard, including as adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking.


Performance, Engine, and Transmission

The Ghibli comes standard with a 345-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 engine and rear-wheel drive, but the Modena model boosts power to 424 horsepower. The top-of-the-line Trofeo model comes with a 580-hp twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine. 


The V-6 is standard with rear-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive (Q4 in Maserati lingo) is an option.Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In 2014, we evaluated a S model (which will be replaced by the Modena in 2022) and were enchanted by the unusual sounds it produced. It managed a 4.7-second zero-to-60-mph time on our test track, which was impressive in 2014, but it can now be outpaced by a non-AMG Mercedes-Benz E-class.



Maserati has increased the power of that version of the V-6 engine to 424 horsepower since then. We tested this engine in the Maserati Levante SUV, and it clocked in at 5.1 seconds, so the Ghibli should be substantially faster.


 The V-8-powered Trofeo variant delivers an even bigger punch, with a 3.7-second sprint to 60 mph, according to our calculations. On the road, the Ghibli is brash, yet it maintains a level of refinement that puts it on par with today's top luxury sport sedans.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy


The Ghibli's EPA fuel-economy ratings are lower than the average mid-size luxury car since it lacks a base four-cylinder variant. The rear-wheel-drive V-6 models get 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the interstate; all-wheel drive gets 16 mpg in the city. The Trofeo's V-8 engine gets 13 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the interstate. We haven't put the Ghibli through its paces on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, but we plan to do so soon.


Cargo, Interior, and Comfort


While the outside screams Italian flair, the inside isn't as as opulent as one might think. A couple of its interior components are sourced from Stellantis's smaller vehicle lineup. Consider the following scenario: It has the same window switches as the Jeep Cherokee, as well as light switches and steering-column stalks from the Chrysler Town & Country, which is no longer in production. 


The Ghibli, on the other hand, may be ordered with hand-stitched leather and silk seats, a faux-suede headliner, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The trunk of the Ghibli is bigger than that of the E-class or the A6, although the BMW 5-series has a little more room. We'll see how many carry-on suitcases a Ghibli can accommodate when it comes to visit our workplace, and we'll update our evaluation accordingly.


Connectivity and Infotainment


A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a glossy display is standard on all Ghibli variants, and it runs a re-skinned version of Google's Android Automotive interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as with navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio.


 A base eight-speaker audio system is also included, but audiophiles will like the fact that Maserati offers two premium audio systems as options. The first is a Harman/Kardon 10-speaker system, while the second is a Bowers & Wilkins 15-speaker system.


Features for Driver Assistance and Safet


The Ghibli comes with a number of driver-assistance functions, the majority of which are standard.

  2. Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist is standard.
  3. Standard features include adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode.

Coverage for Warranty and Maintenance


The Ghibli, like most European mid-size luxury cars, comes with a standard four-year/50,000-mile warranty. It would be good if Maserati included a free planned maintenance package with the purchase of a new Ghibli, but this is not included in the basic package. In this category, the BMW 5-series and the Jaguar XF both offer better value.
